Women who know their place.

Received this via email and seriously spat my coffee onto the screen! (I wonder if it’s even true, if Baba Wawa did go back and have this convo, anyhow, it IS funny).

WOMEN WHO KNOW THEIR PLACE……. it’s all in a point of view!

Barbara Walters, of 20/20, did a story on gender roles in Kabul, Afghanistan, several years before the Afghan conflict. She noted that women customarily walked five paces behind their husbands.

She recently returned to Kabul and observed that women still walk behind their husbands. Despite the overthrow of the oppressive Taliban regime, the women are happy to maintain the old custom.

Ms. Walters approached one of the Afghani women and asked, ‘Why do you now seem happy with an old custom that you once tried so desperately to change?’

The woman looked Ms. Walters straight in the eyes, and without hesitation said,

“Land Mines.”

Interesting… I’m actually not sure I believe it. Someone I know was a senatorial aid from the US and traveled to Kuwait before and after the first gulf war. He told a story kinda like that, except that after the gulf war women were walking in front of the men on account of fear of landmines.

I know he has told that story to various newsgroups, and women’s organizations. My first impression is that someone made an apocryphal forward based off of a very sad, but true situation.

  3. That’s a very old joke/urban legend, I believe.

Cute joke, but not for the husbands!

  6. Very old joke. First version I heard was post 6-day war. In that one, the observer notes that Ahmed now allows his wife to walk in front. ‘Ahmed, you’ve become progressive! What happened?’ ‘Land mines.’
