Update Pantry

I went shopping for groceries earlier. Got home. Put stuff away. Realized I hadn’t bought the beans and the barley that I need for the cholent. I have to go back out.

Don’t you wish that the pantry took inventory of itself and updated your blackberry with what was missing? There must be an app for that. Sigh. Or, plug in a weeks worth of menus, and it tells you what you are missing, ingredients-wise.

My pantry is a big black hole and things disappear. The kids open the pantry expecting for new things to appear in the 15 minutes since they were there, but I know there is a disappear button somewhere in there.

Back to the store….trudge trudge trudge….

  1. Just saw an interview with someone from Google who said that Google plans to help people, because they need to know what to do next. And what to put on the grocery list was the example he used. He also said that people will have to change their names when they reach adulthood, because of the embarrassing social media trail they left as teens.

I really just wish my pantry items labeled themselves with things like “don’t eat, for Shabbat/family dinner/party/etc.” so I wouldn’t mysteriously find all of the random foods gone. Mac’n'Cheese -go for it- the beef I’m defrosting for stew NOT kebabs for all of your friends – not so much.

I have a shopping list hanging on the fridge, and ideally whoever finishes something is supposed to add it to the list. Doesn’t always work out, but it is better than nothing.

I have a white board, and whenever I see something is running low (ie we’ll need it in the next 2 weeks) I add it to the list. I don’t wait until it’s gone, otherwise it’s too late (or it may not be me who finishes it). I find this works VERY well–we always know where the “staples” shopping list is, and we can add to it based on what’s on sale and our menu plan for the week.

This also allows us to note when something we use regularly goes on sale so we can stock up.

PDACookbook will supposedly do that, but it didn’t strike me as the world’s best app, to be honest. Surely someone can do it.
