Uniforms vs Dress Code

Which do you prefer for your kids?

Growing up in the UK, we had school uniforms. In junior school it was a navy blue gymslip – I think you call that a “jumper” over here, and a light blue shirt underneath. In high school, ugh, the Hasmonean colours were grey and maroon. Grey pleated skirt, white shirt, grey sweater and maroon jacket.  I hated wearing a uniform but I didn’t waste any time in the morning deciding what to wear.

My boys have always had a dress code rather than a uniform. Shirts without pictures or logos, no jeans, pants without too many pockets. The older boys have to wear button down shirts and dress pants, and the shirts must be in muted colours. No trendy sneakers.

Is it easier for boys to have a dress code than for girls? The girls’ schools all seem to have a uniform. What’s your preference? Did you have a uniform in school?

I didn’t have a uniform in scgool, but Idreamed of having one.

I particularly liked those british school blazers with their gorgeous school emblems on them.

Uniforms for sure. No doubt at all in my mind. Saves lots of time every morning.

My kids’ Jewish dayschool recently went to uniforms. I am seriously not a fan. Makes the kids look like seals on a beach, and the HS girls still roll up their skirts as far as they dare. Would happily get rid of them.

I definitely prefer school uniform. My daughter is starting at Hasmo next week and their uniform has just been updated to a black pleated skirt, white blouse with thin maroon stripes and a maroon V-neck sweatshirt with the school logo. The only downside I would say is the large outlay involved because all the items need to be purchased from a specialist uniform shop/store. (However, saying that, the school does help with the cost of uniform in cases of hardship.) By the way, Hadassah, I don’t recall the maroon jacket from our days…are you confusing that with the boys’ blazers?!

Ruthie – how nice to “see” you! Cannot believe your daughter is old enough for Hasmo. How the time flies!!

There were a few girls who wore the blazers – but yes, the boys all had to wear them.

I always had uniforms. Elementary school was particularly rough – red, white, or blue top as lobg as it wasn’t a t-shirt and a plaid skirt. High school was a kilt – plaid or solid depending on your year- a button down dress shirt of any colour and a blazer, sweater, or sweatshirt that matched the skirt. I hated it for about a week in HS and then realised it made my life so much easier.

The coed uniforms nowadays don’t sound that bad but ALL the BY’s have some form of a plaid skirt and that sorta grosses me out.
like around where i live its green plaid and it doesn’t even look normal.
if you are making someone wear something almost every for the very least make it nice colors that look normal together.
