Swimming Attire

As I have written before we have access to a friend’s pool. Previously, hanging around with the boys in the pool (no one else around, or able to see in) I was fine being in a bathing suit. These days, not so much.

Three out of my 4 boys are teenagers, and yes, I am their mother, but seeing as I am modestly dressed all the time outside of the pool, it just feels strange being in a bathing suit in front of them.

Today I went in the pool with a little skirt over my one piece but it was so impractical.

There have been many discussions on my FB page over the last little while about SHVIMKLEID or special modest bathing suits for the religious woman. I am not about to wear a wetsuit for sitting in the back yard or frolicking in the pool with my boys. But the one piece is not working for me. Let’s not even touch on the itsy bitsy teeny weeny yellow polka dot bikini of yesteryear.

So I think this week I am on a quest for a swimsuit that meets all my requirements. You can stop laughing, I know it’s a tall order. I am thinking something with shorts. You know, the boys all wear these long shorts to swim in, why do they not make those for women? I could so be modest enough in front of my boys in long swim shorts and a tankini.

What works for you?

yes they do make them. doing a quick search, if you look for women’s board shorts you might find something that might work for you. e.g. MEC has http://www.mec.ca/Products/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524442632867&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302872315

Hydrochic! I am a long-time fan, and they have a huge range of styles that include shorts and essentially a t-shirt. I do wear one with more coverage than that, but I am spending a month down at the beach. ( I know, poor me.) I can kayak and run around and even run over to the fish store in my bathing suit. It doesn’t feel or look like a wet suit, but more like activewear I can swim in. Not uncomfortable at all. Check out what they have with less coverage. I have also gotten my daughters a style I think you would like a lot, made by a Christian home-schooler, originally for her kids. I am really happy with the fit, comfort, and quality. Check out her stuff at: http://www.swimmodest.com/ – but PLEASE let me know if you choose either one.

I’ve been tossing around the idea of making my girls swimsuits that are basically 3/4 length sleeve knee-length T-shirt dresses over capri length leggings, but out of swimsuit material so they can go in the sprinkler and then run around the neighborhood without worrying about who may be watching.

  4. If Aqua Modesta–that’s what I do and it’s super comfortable, made of bathing suit material and keeps me from sunburning–is too much for you then definitely check out Lands’ End because they make all sorts of pieces you can put together. I picked myself a tankini plus skirt with built-in bottoms suit there for when I want to show more skin.

  5. Try this and look at “bottoms.” I don’t know about those board shorts. I’ve tried it before back in the early modesty days and it was awful. I like wearing a suit, I can actually swim in. I don’t just walk around in it looking cute. http://www.landsend.com/ix/womens-clothing/Women/Swimsuits/index.html?seq=1~2~3&catNumbers=83~134&visible=1~2~1&store=le&sort=Recommended&tab=2

  6. Oh and Coolibar also, like Lands’ End, makes all sorts of options you can put together. Check out the long swim shorts or the swim shorts with a built-in cover and/or skirt. Very cute. http://www.coolibar.com/women-s-swimwear.html

wow ladies – awesome web sites. any clue how the sizes run? if I don’t get to try stuff on it would be frustrating to get too small or too big. I know Land’s End tends to run big…

    • depends on your size. see i think i thought they ran too small on bottoms! there are some places that actually sell lands’ end in store (like Sears) so you might be able to get it in person after trying it on. i would go by the measurements if posted, seriously. i buy online all the time now so i have pulled out my measuring tape for stores i don’t shop in too often. if i lived closer, i’d lend it to ya. :) http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00002N7RH

  8. http://www.wholesomewear.com/slimmer-c.html if you scroll down to extended slimming swimmer, their shells go past the elbows and under thingies go past the knees. If I ever swim again (we need more ladies only swimming in Cleveland!) this is what I’ll get. Sure, it’s too much for just being with your boys, but this way you can take it anywhere there’s ladies swimming and don’t need to worry about getting another swimsuit in addition. I don’t really see a need for board shorts. Plus if anyone does peek through your fence or over your hedges or whatever, you’re covered. happy swimming!

I am wearing board shorts and a sort if bikini top, from old navy. They have a wide variety of options, some fairly modest. I maximize skin exposure due to heat stroke

I had a huge thing about this last summer, and ended up going for a full coverage tankini top with a skirted bottom (both from Victoria’s Secret actually) — I felt that the modest suits (ala aquamodesta and swimmodest) draw more attention, and to me that is sort of anti-tzniut. My skirted tankini look is definitely modest compared to most other swimwear, but allows me to comfortable swim and frolic – which is key since the only time in the pool is to play with kids.

I too was going to suggest LandsEnd for thei wide variety of peices you can out together.
Also, a friend of mine is the entrepreneur behind Swimmin’ Thigh Wear http://www.swimminthighwear.com so this is as good a time as any to share it!

Wow, please forgive all many typing errors. Where was my brain?

I gave you the link for Hydrochic because I thought you wanted a full cover up. The sun is very strong here and I swim regularly and spend lots of time around the pool with my kids. I wear Speedo women’s swim trunks and I just bought an Arena tee-shirt today. If you spend a lot of time in the pool you need chlorine resistant material, like Speedo or Arena provide.
    Good luck.

there’s a great site that sells beautiful Modest Bathing Suits, the company is Undercover Waterwear. They’ve been in business for 8 years and recently launched their website. They are so fashionable that you dont mind actually being seen with them in public! :) their modest swimwear is also very versatile and inexpensive, so you can find a style and price range that works well for you!
