Seinfeld and the Jews

This video was too funny not to share. This woman learned all about Judaism from Seinfeld.

  1. You circumcise a baby with a BOIL? What, do you boil the baby? Bring in a big pot of Cajun crawfish? Wha–? LOL This is strange and hilarious. Thanks for sharing. I think. I’m a little embarrassed, now, on behalf of all non-Jewish people…

    • HSaboMilner says:

Holly- the person who does a ritual circumcision is called a MOHEL. In some pronunciations it is pronounced MOYL….. so thats kinda where the “oil” comes from…. but the B – anyone’s guess….. :)

      • Shoshana says:

The “M” and “B” mix up comes because the sounds are made with the lips in the same position. The only phonological difference is that the “B” is a stop sound so you can’t continue it, and the “M” is a fricative so you continue it.

  2. P.S. I clicked “Notify me…” below. Imagine my momentary horror (after watching this video) upon seeing “Yes, I want to be subscribed.” (I dunno… my brain does weird things, sometimes. I had to remind it “I’m a woman!” and then it reminded me “that’s not what subscribed means, you nut.”)

  3. Oh, I know it’s a mohel. (I know Hadass, remember? We’ve got boys.)

  4. No, no, no – it’s okay. I appreciate the explanation – just in case. (I still haven’t quite forgiven my BFF from 9th grade for not telling me it’s not cool to play a piano duet at a Bar Mitzvah. Still – she’s Jewish and has more reason to feel guilty than I do!)

There’s plenty I don’t know. But I’m still laughing over that video.

  5. Sara says:

Maybe I’m in the minority but I think that women is sweet. She’s definitely trying to give it her best effort. She probably just found out she’s going to a synagogue and is digging up any information she’s collected on it and nervous about making a good impression, I found her endearing. I liked this video… it’s better then a lot of people’s opinions of Judaism. Admit it, there are things you mistook about Judaism at any age, you just didn’t’ broadcast it. :)

    • HSaboMilner says:

i agree too – i thought it was great that she wanted to be prepared and informed.

    • Otir says:

She *is* very sweet. I had seen that video some time ago (it dates back to last year I think), and remember I had browsed through her comments answering to people who were either praising her or laughing at her (kindly most of them), and she had given a very sweet follow-up on how the encounter with the congregants had gone, and she was very impressed at their kindness and how welcoming they had been.

  6. I agree, Sara. Doesn’t keep me from laughing, but I appreciate a good laugh over coffee (provided I’m warned before drinking a mouthful of it). I think the man with her is sensible, too. And sweet in his own way, trying to reassure her that she can just be herself, without belittling or berating her for her nervousness and her making the video. He’s not playing along, but he’s accepting enough of her doing it.

hehe :-) what an authentic source to learn about Judaism :-)

  8. Miriam says:

It’s very funny, but she is an up-and-coming comedian, so I’m afraid you’ve been ‘had’….
