WWYD – text messaging

Recently I was at a public gathering, where out of respect for the purpose of the evening I turned off my BlackBerry. I would have hoped most people would have done the same. There was a lady sitting next to me who not only didn’t turn her phone off, she didn’t even put it on vibrate. The whole evening she was texting back and forth with friends – the annoying chirp every time a new message came in was disruptive. At one point I was extremely irritated – and out of the corner of my eye was able to read the text messages she received and was sending. Pure fluff.

I kept my mouth shut because she is someone well respected in this community, but I still feel I should have asked her to turn it off.

What would you have done?

I would have asked her to either lower the sound or place it on silent. Well respected or not, respect begins with how you treat others.

I don’t always remember to silence mine until it makes an annoying noise, but then I for sure would at least set it to vibrate. I try to give others one freebie, after that I’m all death glares :) actually they look more like this ./.

  3. Politely ask her to turn it to vibrate

I could see if it was an event where people were roaming around (fair, party, etc) to have it on vibrate. The fact that she’s sitting next to you makes me think you were at a dinner? In that case only people who would have to respond to an emergency (doctors, EMTs, firefighters, etc) should have their phones on at all.

If I found it very disturbing I would find another seat to sit in. If no other seat was available, I would politely ask her to put it on vibrate.

Vibrate would have been appropriate. She was just ignorant. If I knew her well enough I would have asked her to turn it to vibrate, otherwise, I would have moved. Sometimes, people just don’t think of others.

I wonder if she even knows how to make the phone vibrate instead of beep or ring?
