“I love you” – a rant

Who doesn’t like hearing those three perfect little words? Most of the time I really cherish the way they sound in my ear. Most of the time. But please tell me why it is that when kids get into any kind of trouble whatsoever they look at you with their puppy dog eyes, and say “Ima, you know something, I love you” and it kinda has a question mark at the end? It’s sort of like they are saying, “look, we both know I did something wrong, but we also both know how much you love and adore me and worship the ground that I walk on, and because of this great love, well, if you love someone that much you cannot punish them, right?” WRONG!! That has never stopped me before, and it won’t stop me again. Nice try, buster!!

The kicker? When you mete out the punishment, the smart ones say “I understand that you have to punish me because it’s the only way I will learn. If you didn’t love me you wouldn’t care about disciplining me, so thank you for making me do extra chores. You must love me best”.

One can never win. I guess one just has to pray to survive these teenage years. Only 12 more years till we are done. Gulp!

Sounds like your boys are very bright and very well brought up . It takes stamina to raise four boys so close in age, and as a single Mom when it was the most important formative years.
