Book Review: The Modern Menu

Book Review: The Modern Menu

I loved this book! So clean and elegant – the photography (by Andrew Zuckerman) was just stunning, and the layout was perfect. The tagline on the book is “Simple. Beautiful. Kosher” and that’s exactly what she has given us.

None of the recipes seem to be too complicated, and what I appreciated the most was the lack of crazy ingredients, and the emphasis on good wholesome foods. Kim Kushner has created some wonderful recipes, with step by step idiot-proof instructions. I could give this book to my 10 year old and he’d be able to prepare the recipes without too much assistance.

Kim introduces every recipe and it’s almost as if you can hear her voice talking to you over coffee in her kitchen – you feel her presence throughout. Yes, it’s a book of recipes but it’s also a peek into Kim’s kitchen – where I feel I would be so totally welcomed.

Recipes on our must try list: Tequila London Broil with Mango Chutney, Cinnamon Hazelnut Pavlova with Raspberries and her Broken Dark Chocolate Cake looks as though it would be a winner every time!!

The only negative is that this book is so full of clean white pages that I would get it dirty in no time whilst cooking!!

I was not compensated for this review but I did receive a free copy of the book.

HaDassah, get a piece of plexiglass that you can lay over both pages of the book to hold it open to the page in use AND protect the pages. Alternatively, use a clip-type skirt hanger to hang it from the knob of the cabinet above the counter you are working on. The clips need to be large and strong if it is a big book, so most times the plexi works better.
